Why I like officiating:
When I started it was for the money but as I developed my craft, it became apparent I was pretty good at being an official. I enjoyed the challenge of continuing to improve. Right now I referee really for the opportunity to work with less experienced officials and hopefully pass along some of my knowledge and experience.
Cool Assignments:
The goal of every official is to get a couple of Finals in there career. I have been fortunate to officiate a number of Final Championships games; however, my favorite was most likely Juvenile Nationals in 2001. I was my first real experience of how far people could succeed in officiating.
One of the most entertaining game I have officiated, actually occurred this year. It was a 3A boys game. The lead was never more than 4 points and there must have been 15 lead changes. The finals score was one point. You just never know when a great game will come along.
What do you struggle with as a developing official:
I am proud to say, “if you can do it wrong, well I have done it and likely more than once”. That is my biggest challenge. I will try something and get it wrong before figuring it out. My challenge is figuring it out as quickly as possible.
